The pogie boat Carter's Creek at Ampro Shipyard - Transparency, Slide
Carter's Creek, formerly the Absecon (built in 1950 for the J. Howard Smith Co. of Long Island, NY), at Ampro Shipyard, Weems, Virginia. The 135-foot boat was refitted into a modern day menhaden snapper rig by the owners, Curtis and Jimmy Kellum, with help from Ampro. Larry Chowning boarded the Iva W. at 4 a.m. on December 13, 1985 to accompany Captain Johnny Ward and crew on a blue crab dredging run. The 60' Iva W, named after Capt. Throttle detail - Transparency, Slide
Throttle detail on Dink Miller's boat Mary Joan. Larry Chowning accompanied Miller on a patent tong run from his mooring on Dividing Creek in Lancaster County. The Mary Joan is a classic forty-two foot wooden deadrise clam boat. Photos from this day are included in Chapter 12 of Chowning's book Harvesting the Chesapeake, Tools and Traditions, pages 111-119.
