Nine skipjacks competed in a 1995 Labor Day race near Deal Island, Maryland. Larry Chowning was aboard the Rebecca T. Ruark for this race, and told the story in the article "America's last sailing fishing boats go for the gold," National Fisherman, January, 1996, pages 20-21. "A Chesapeake Bay tradtition of racing sail-driven working skipjacks comes alive three times a year as the captains and crews of the few remaining dredge boas hoist sailes to race for pride and prizes." |
