Description |
11 x 14.1" The Point Lookout Lighthouse, located at the southern tip of Point Lookout State Park in St. Mary's County, Maryland, marks the entrance to the Potomac River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. Commissioned in 1830, it is one of the oldest remaining lighthouses in the United States. The lighthouse was constructed by John Donahoo, a prominent Maryland lighthouse builder, and was first lit on September 20, 1830. The original structure was a one-and-a-half-story brick dwelling with a lantern room atop the roof. In 1883, the lighthouse was expanded to a full two stories, and a fog bell tower was added to aid in navigation during poor visibility. Additionally, a buoy repair depot was established in 1883, and a coal storage shed was added in 1884 to support the lighthouse's operations. |
