Title |
Corn shuck broom |
Description |
Mrs. Emma Williams of Samos, Virgnia was featured in a story Larry Chowning wrote for the Southside Sentinel, published in Vol. 86, No. 49, December 10, 1981. Mrs. Williams made corn shuck brooms for watermen. The brooms were very effective for scrubbing down oyster boats. She and her family collected corn shucks left over from the fall corn harvest, and used the shucks to shape the broom heads. The handles were made of gum, hickory or oak and were 5' long. |
