Description |
Larry Chowning boarded the Iva W. at 4 a.m. on December 13, 1985 to accompany Captain Johnny Ward and crew on a blue crab dredging run. The 60' Iva W, named after Capt. Johhny's wife, was built by John Wright of Deltaville, VA in 1928. The crew this day were Floyd Johnson of Newport News and Franklin Forrest of Mathews. The Ward family owned four buy boats at the time of this trip: Ward Brothers, Nora W., Iva W. and the Thomas W. Captain Johnny Ward was one the most well-known buyboat captains on Chesapeake Bay, and in his day "sailed to just about every nook and cranny of the bay, hauling and buying everything from to seafood to produce." The story and photos appeared in the December, 1985 edition of National Fisherman Magazine, pages 22-24. |
